RESUMO

Electrochromic (EC) glazing has garnered significant attention recently as a crucial solution for enhancing energy efficiency in future construction and automotive sectors. EC glazing could significantly reduce the energy usage of buildings compared to traditional blinds and glazing. Despite their commercial availability, several challenges remain, including issues with switching time, leakage of electrolytes, production costs, etc. Consequently, these areas demand more attention and further studies. Among inorganic-based EC materials, tungsten oxide nanostructures are essential due to its outstanding advantages such as low voltage demand, high coloration coefficient, large optical modulation range, and stability. This review will summarize the principal design and mechanism of EC device fabrication. It will highlight the current gaps in understanding the mechanism of EC theory, discuss the progress in material development for EC glazing, including various solutions for improving EC materials, and finally, introduce the latest advancements in photo-EC devices that integrate photovoltaic and EC technologies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) has a high recurrence rate after resection. Because of the lack of specific manifestations, recurrent DFSP is easily misdiagnosed as post-resection scar. A few series have reported ultrasound findings of recurrent DFSP; moreover, the usefulness of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in differentiating recurrent DFSP has not been studied. OBJECTIVE: We investigated conventional and contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the differential diagnosis of recurrent DFSP and post-resection scar. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the findings of conventional and contrast-enhanced ultrasound in 34 cases of recurrent DFSP and 38 postoperative scars examined between January 2018 and December 2022. RESULTS: The depth and vascular density of recurrent DFSP were greater than those of postoperative scars (P < 0.05). On gray-scale ultrasound, recurrent DFSP lesions were more commonly irregular, heterogeneous, and hypoechoic, with finger-like projections and ill-defined borders. Postoperative scar was more likely to appear as hypoechoic and homogeneous with well-defined borders (P < 0.05). On color Doppler ultrasound, recurrent DFSP was more likely to feature rich arterial and venous blood flow, and postoperative scar was more likely to display poor blood flow (P < 0.05). On contrast-enhanced ultrasound, recurrent DFSP was more likely to feature heterogeneous hyper-enhancement, and postoperative scar was more likely to display homogeneous iso-enhancement (P < 0.05). Recurrent DFSP presented a higher peak and sharpness than postoperative scar (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Conventional and contrast-enhanced ultrasound produced distinct features of recurrent DFSP and post-resection scar, which could improve the accuracy of differential diagnosis.

RESUMO

Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a debilitating disorder frequently accompanied by mood complications such as depression and anxiety. The current study sought to elucidate the molecular underpinnings that contribute to the pathogenesis of TN and its associated anxiety. Employing a partial transection of the infraorbital nerve (pT-ION) in a murine model, we successfully induced sustained primary and secondary orofacial allodynia alongside anxiety-like behavioral manifestations. Transcriptome-wide gene microarray analyses revealed a marked upregulation of Foxg1 subsequent to pT-ION. Targeted knockdown of Foxg1, achieved through bilateral microinjection of adeno-associated virus harboring Foxg1-specific shRNA into the lateral habenula (LHb), resulted in a significant attenuation of both orofacial pain and anxiety-like behaviors. Subsequent RNA sequencing implicated Prkcd as a downstream effector gene modulated by Foxg1. Pharmacological inhibition of protein kinase C delta, encoded by Prkcd, within the LHb markedly ameliorated pT-ION-induced symptomatology. The dual luciferase assay revealed that Foxg1 substantially enhances the transcriptional activity of the Prkcd gene. Collectively, these findings indicate that trigeminal nerve injury leads to Foxg1 upregulation in the LHb, which in turn elevates the expression of Prkcd, culminating in the manifestation of orofacial pain and anxiety-like behaviors. This work offers promising therapeutic targets and a conceptual framework for the clinical management of TN and its psychological comorbidities.

RESUMO

Background: The histopathological classification of salivary gland tumors is extremely complex. The imaging manifestations of some tumors are nonspecific. It is particularly important to improve the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors. This study aimed to analyze the diagnostic value of different parameters of shear wave elastography (SWE) in the quantitative diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, and to evaluate the value of SWE combined with conventional ultrasound. Methods: The study was conducted retrospectively. Patients who underwent salivary gland tumor resection from April 2021 to November 2022 in the Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine were randomly recruited to the study. A total of 305 masses were divided into an elastography group (150 cases) and a control group (155 cases). The control group underwent conventional ultrasonography, whereas the elastography group underwent conventional ultrasonography and elastography. The Young's modulus E of the mass was quantitatively measured in the elastography group, including maximum cross-sectional area (S), maximum Young's modulus (Emax), mean Young's modulus (Emean), and Young's modulus standard deviation (SD). Pathologic diagnosis was used as the reference standard to determine the cut-off of shear wave elastography of salivary gland tumors, and the diagnostic performance of the 2 groups was compared. Results: In the elastography group, the diagnostic value of Emax·S (the product of the maximum Young's modulus of the mass and the maximum cross-sectional area of the mass) in the differential diagnosis of malignant tumors (MT) and non-malignant tumors (NMT) was the highest, with a sensitivity and specificity of 72.0% and 80.0%, respectively. The diagnostic value of Emax/D (the quotient of the maximum Young's modulus of the mass and the maximum diameter of the mass) in the differential diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) and adenolymphoma (AL) was the highest, with a sensitivity and specificity of 62.3% and 82.4%, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors were compared between the elastography group and the control group. The area under the curve (AUC) of the elastography group was 0.915, the sensitivity, specificity, and Youden index were 84.0%, 88.0%, and 0.720, respectively. The AUC of the control group was 0.906, the sensitivity, specificity, and Youden index were 76.0%, 90.0%, and 0.660, respectively, which is the main finding of the study. Conclusions: SWE can be used as a complementary method for the diagnosis of salivary gland tumors, which has certain value in improving the diagnostic performance. As a result, the sensitivity is improved but the specificity is worsened by addition of SWE to B-mode ultrasound and color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI).

RESUMO

SALT OVERLY SENSITIVE1 (SOS1) is a key component of plant salt tolerance. However, how SOS1 transcription is dynamically regulated in plant response to different salinity conditions remains elusive. Here, we report that C-type Cyclin1;1 (CycC1;1) negatively regulates salt tolerance by interfering with WRKY75-mediated transcriptional activation of SOS1 in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Disruption of CycC1;1 promotes SOS1 expression and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis because CycC1;1 interferes with RNA polymerase II recruitment by occupying the SOS1 promoter. Enhanced salt tolerance of the cycc1;1 mutant was completely compromised by an SOS1 mutation. Moreover, CycC1;1 physically interacts with the transcription factor WRKY75, which can bind to the SOS1 promoter and activate SOS1 expression. In contrast to the cycc1;1 mutant, the wrky75 mutant has attenuated SOS1 expression and salt tolerance, whereas overexpression of SOS1 rescues the salt sensitivity of wrky75. Intriguingly, CycC1;1 inhibits WRKY75-mediated transcriptional activation of SOS1 via their interaction. Thus, increased SOS1 expression and salt tolerance in cycc1;1 were abolished by WRKY75 mutation. Our findings demonstrate that CycC1;1 forms a complex with WRKY75 to inactivate SOS1 transcription under low salinity conditions. By contrast, under high salinity conditions, SOS1 transcription and plant salt tolerance are activated at least partially by increased WRKY75 expression but decreased CycC1;1 expression.

RESUMO

Natural lotus seed oligosaccharides monomers (LOSs: LOS3-1, LOS3-2, and LOS4) were prepared by preparative chromatography and were hydroxyl-labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). The prebiotic properties of LOSs by the gut microbiota of male Balb/C mice in vivo and in vitro were studied. In vivo experiment results showed that LOS4 could significantly increase the average daily food consumption, weight, liver index and the abundance of Bacteroides and Bifidobacterium for mice (p < 0.05). In addition, LOS4 also had significant proliferation effect on Bifidobacterium adolescentis and longum in vitro (p < 0.05). Laser confocal microscopy observation showed interaction site between LOS4-FITC and Bifidobacterium adolescentis was located outside and inside of cell, which was completed within 1 h. The relationship between structures of LOSs and prebiotics of intestinal flora (especially Bifidobacterium), and expanded the knowledge on the effects of carbohydrate polymerization degree (DP) and glycosidic bond connection with fermentation selectivity of bacteria was studied.

RESUMO

Regulation of seed germination is important for plant survival and propagation. ABSCISIC ACID (ABA) INSENSITIVE5 (ABI5), the central transcription factor in the ABA signaling pathway, plays a fundamental role in the regulation of ABA-responsive gene expression during seed germination; however, how ABI5 transcriptional activation activity is regulated remains to be elucidated. Here, we report that C-type Cyclin1;1 (CycC1;1) is an ABI5-interacting partner affecting the ABA response and seed germination in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). The CycC1;1 loss-of-function mutant is hypersensitive to ABA, and this phenotype was rescued by mutation of ABI5. Moreover, CycC1;1 suppresses ABI5 transcriptional activation activity for ABI5-targeted genes including ABI5 itself by occupying their promoters and disrupting RNA polymerase II recruitment; thus the cycc1;1 mutant shows increased expression of ABI5 and genes downstream of ABI5. Furthermore, ABA reduces the interaction between CycC1;1 and ABI5, while phospho-mimic but not phospho-dead mutation of serine-42 in ABI5 abolishes CycC1;1 interaction with ABI5 and relieves CycC1;1 inhibition of ABI5-mediated transcriptional activation of downstream target genes. Together, our study illustrates that CycC1;1 negatively modulates the ABA response by interacting with and inhibiting ABI5, while ABA relieves the CycC1;1 interaction with and inhibition of ABI5 to activate ABI5 activity for the ABA response, thereby inhibiting seed germination.

RESUMO

Low phosphate (LP) in soil is a common nutrient stress that severely restricts agricultural production, but the role, if any, of the major stress phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) in plant phosphate (Pi) starvation responses remains elusive. Here, we report that LP-induced ABA accumulation promotes Pi uptake in an ABA INSENSITIVE5 (ABI5)-dependent manner in Arabidopsis thaliana. LP significantly activated plant ABA biosynthesis, metabolism, and stress responses, suggesting a role of ABA in the plant response to Pi availability. LP-induced ABA accumulation and expression of two major high-affinity phosphate transporter genes PHOSPHATE TRANSPORTER1;1/1;4 (PHT1;1/1;4) were severely impaired in a mutant lacking BETA-GLUCOSIDASE1 (BG1), which converts conjugated ABA to active ABA, and the mutant had shorter roots and less Pi content than wild-type plants under LP conditions. Moreover, a mutant of ABI5, which encodes a central transcription factor in ABA signaling, also exhibited suppressed root elongation and had reduced Pi content under LP conditions. ABI5 facilitated Pi acquisition by activating the expression of PHT1;1 by directly binding to its promoter, while overexpression of PHT1;1 completely rescued its Pi content under LP conditions. Together, our findings illustrate a molecular mechanism by which ABA positively modulates phosphate acquisition through ABI5 in the Arabidopsis response to phosphate deficiency.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to characterize and differentiate the ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) features of mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) and acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC). METHODS AND PATIENTS: A total of 83 patients with clinically proven MASC and AciCC were analyzed. The following characteristics were assessed on US, CT, and magnetic resonance imaging: lesion size, shape, margin, echogenicity, echotexture, cystic components, posterior echo, vascularity, density, degree of enhancement, enhancement pattern, signal intensity (SI) on T1- and T2-weighted images (WI), hemorrhages, and lymph node enlargement. RESULTS: Similarities were observed between the imaging performance of MASC and AciCC. Differences between the two characteristics of shape on US and cystic components on CT were statistically significant. The proportion of MASC to regular shape on US (p = 0.006) and cystic components on CT (p = 0.027) was significantly higher than that of AciCC. Regular shape on US had the highest sensitivity in the identification of MASC and AciCC, while regular shape on US + cystic component on CT had the highest specificity. CONCLUSIONS: The shape on US and cystic components on CT are key characteristics for distinguishing MASC and AciCC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To explore the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in predicting early lymph node metastasis in clinically node-negative oral cancer patients. METHODS: We recruited 42 patients (a total of 70 lymph nodes) with clinically node-negative oral cancer in the study. All of them received both conventional ultrasound (B-mode and power Doppler) and CEUS before operation and then they were taken for pathological examination to analyze the diagnostic accuracy. And their CEUS data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of CEUS in the diagnosis of cervical lymph node metastasis of oral cancer were 82.7 and 82.9%, respectively. The accuracy of conventional ultrasound was only 67.1% while that of CEUS was up to 82.9%. The area under the cure (AUC) of CEUS in detecting lymph node metastasis was 0.828, which was higher than the 0.614 by conventional ultrasound, with statistically significant differences observed (p < 0.05). Most of the metastatic lymph nodes were characterized by inhomogeneous enhancement and the peak intensity (PI) of the metastatic group was lower than that of the non-metastatic group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with conventional ultrasound, CEUS may have higher clinical value for predicting early lymph node metastasis in clinically node-negative oral cancer patients. And quantitative parameters obtained from CEUS may provide valuable information in the diagnosis of cervical lymph node metastasis.

RESUMO

This study uses a response surface methodology to optimize the vacuum deep frying process of surimi cubes. The effects of vacuum deep frying temperature, frying time, and thickness on the hardness and color difference of surimi cubes with Raphanus sativus were studied. Further, the manuscript explored the quality changes of surimi cubes under different frying processes (vacuum deep frying, atmospheric deep frying, and shallow frying). Moreover, the Chinese Min-Cantonese cuisine-Raphanus sativus was utilized as auxiliary raw material to change the hardness and reduce the oil content. The optimal parameters of response surface methodology determined were: vacuum deep frying temperature 130 °C, frying time 900 s, and thickness 0.75 cm. Additionally, under this process condition, the hardness of the surimi chunks was 2015 ± 48.17 g, and the color difference was 23.27 ± 1.86. Surimi cubes without Raphanus sativus have superior elasticity and low hardness, and surimi cubes with Raphanus sativus have little color difference and high chewability. After the vacuum deep frying process, there was a high protein content and superior crispness. Shallow frying and adding Raphanus sativus effectively reduced the product's oil content. Therefore, Raphanus sativus is suitable as a potential nutritional supplement to broaden its application in fried surimi foods.

RESUMO

Rhubarb (also named Rhei or Dahuang), one of the most ancient and important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), belongs to the Rheum L. genus from the Polygonaceae family, and its application can be traced back to 270 BC in "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing". Rhubarb has long been used as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic and anticancer medicine in China. However, for a variety of reasons, such as origin, variety and processing methods, there are differences in the effective components of rhubarb, which eventually lead to decreased quality and poor efficacy. Additionally, although some papers have reviewed the relationship between the active ingredients of rhubarb and pharmacologic actions, most studies have concentrated on one or several aspects, although there has been great progress in rhubarb research in recent years. Therefore, this review aims to summarize recent studies on the geographic distribution, taxonomic identification, pharmacology, clinical applications and safety issues related to rhubarb and provide insights into the further development and application of rhubarb in the future.

RESUMO

Nanomedicine that enables multiple synergetic treatments provides effective non-invasive treatment modalities for cancer therapy. Yet treatments for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are rarely reported. Here, we designed OSCC-targeting multi-functional nanomedicines to overcome the therapeutic obstacles during OSCC treatments, including ineffective chemotherapy, and the traumatic surgery and radiotherapy. The urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR)-targeting ligand AE105 decorated dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSN) encapsulating photonic active ultrasmall Cu2-xS NPs and sonosensitizer Rose Bengal (RB) have been rationally designed and constructed (designated as Cu2-xS-RB@DMSN-AE105, abbreviated as CRDA). These CRDAs initially target the uPAR, which is overexpressed in the OSCC cell membrane, to increase the localized accumulation of CRDAs at tumor sites. Under the irradiation of both near-infrared laser and ultrasound, the in situ photonic-hyperthermal and sonodynamic effects are respectively enabled to induce the cell death of OSCC. Upon both in vitro/in vivo challenges, tumor cells/xenografts have been efficiently eradicated, achieving the targeting and synergetic treatment modality against the OSCC with satisfactory biocompatibility.

RESUMO

AIMS: To investigate the effect of 7-O-geranylquercetin (GQ), a derivative of quercetin (Q), on reversing drug resistance in breast cancer MCF-7/ADR cells and reveal the mechanisms related to P-glycoprotein (P-gp). MAIN METHODS: Cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Accumulation of adriamycin (ADR) in cells was determined by confocal fluorescence microscope and microplate reader while that of rhodamine (Rh) was measured by flow cytometry. Expression levels of P-gp and MDR1 gene in cells were detected by western blot and Real-Time PCR, respectively. Molecular docking of GQ and Q with P-gp was conducted using AutoDock program. Xenograft model was established by inoculating MCF-7/ADR cells in BALB/c-nude mice. Tumor bearing mice were administered with ADR via tail vein injection and/or GQ (Q) by gavage. Expression levels of P-gp in tissues were detected by western blot and immunohistochemistry. KEY FINDINGS: GQ could reverse drug resistance of MCF-7/ADR cells to ADR. GQ inhibited the efflux of ADR by down-regulating the expression of P-gp protein and its encoding gene MDR1 in MCF-7/ADR cells. Molecular modeling showed that GQ matched with P-gp better than Q. GQ enhanced the antitumor effects of ADR and decreased the expression of P-gp in mice and its activities were higher than that of Q. GQ could reverse drug resistance of MCF-7/ADR cells by down-regulating the expression of P-gp in vitro and in vivo. SIGNIFICANCES: The reversal effect of GQ on P-gp-mediated drug resistance indicates its potential as a reversal agent for drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy.

RESUMO

AIMS: To investigate the antitumor effect of 7-O-geranylquercetin (GQ) combining with survivin siRNA (siSuvi) or IL-10 siRNA (siIL-10) to breast cancer. MAIN METHODS: Xenograft tumor model was established by subcutaneously inoculating human breast cancer MCF-7 cells in BALB/c nude mice. Transfection efficiency of siRNA mediated by cationic liposome CDO14 in MCF-7 cells and tumor bearing mice was measured by flow cytometer and living imaging sysytem, respectively. Cell viability was detected using CCK-8 assay. Cell apoptosis was determined by Hoechst33342 staining and AV-PI staining. Tumors bearing mice were administered with GQ by gavage, and/or with liposome CDO14 mediated siRNAs via tail intravenous injection. Expression levels of proteins and cytokines were detected by western blot and ELISA, respectively. KEY FINDINGS: Liposome CDO14 could deliver siRNA to tumor effectively. Combination of GQ and siSuvi promoted the antiproliferation and pro-apoptosis effects of GQ or siSuvi to MCF-7 cells, and reduced the level of survivin and raised the level of caspase-7 in cells. GQ combining with siSuvi inhibited the growth of tumor, down-regulated the expression of survivin and up-regulated the expression of caspase-7 in tumor tissue. Similarly, GQ combining with siIL-10 inhibited the growth of tumor, decreased the level of IL-10 and increased the level of TNF-α. These results revealed that GQ enhanced the pro-apoptosis effect of siSuvi on tumor cells and the modulating effect of siIL-10 on tumor microenvironment. SIGNIFICANCES: Synergistic anti-tumor effect of GQ and siRNAs against breast cancer proved that chemical drugs combining with siRNAs is a promising antitumor strategy.

RESUMO

The interactions between thioglycolic acid-capped-CuInS2 /ZnS quantum dots (CuInS2 /ZnS/TGA QDs) and tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) were investigated using fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The results indicated that the fluorescence intensity of CuInS2 /ZnS/TGA could be quenched by imatinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, gefitinib and erlotinib, which hinted that CuInS2 /ZnS/TGA QDs could be used in the detection of TKI in active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Calibration curves showed good linear correlation and low detection limits. The average recovery was between 98 and 102%. Moreover, the nature of the fluorescence quenching mechanism of CuInS2 /ZnS/TGA QDs by TKI was discussed. A ground state complex was formed by hydrogen bonding between the carboxyl group of CuInS2 /ZnS/TGA QDs and the amino group of TKI. This led to an increase in non-radiative transition and fluorescence quenching of CuInS2 /ZnS/TGA QDs.
